The problem

The crack ran the full height of the wall, from the framing at the top straight down to the slab. The water trail told the story better than the crack did: staining fanned out below the top of the break and ran down the face in a dark band, with mineral deposits left where water had evaporated off the concrete over repeated cycles. The floor at the base of the wall was still damp. Water arriving at the top of a wall like this is getting in well above the footing and tracking down the break, which is exactly why surface patching keeps failing here. The patch sits on the face while the crack behind it stays open the full thickness of the wall.

How we fixed it

We set injection ports along the full length of the crack and injected expandable polyurethane resin under pressure, filling the break to the back face of the wall rather than skinning over the front of it. The resin expands on contact with moisture, so it follows the water into the fine branches running off the main crack and cures there, sealing the route instead of covering the opening. Ports came out and the face was patched flush once the resin had cured.

Materials & methods used
  • Expandable polyurethane injection resin
  • Surface port injection system
  • Flush face patch
