Before and after: Structural Reinforcement (Old Underground Cooler) in Cos Cob, CT

The problem
Old Cos Cob property with an underground cooler space, a buried concrete vault originally built to keep food cold before refrigeration. Decades of soil loading and water exposure had developed a structural crack in the cooler walls. Because the structure is below grade and surrounded by soil, lateral pressure was driving the crack progressively wider.
How we fixed it
Substrate cleaning and prep, then full structural reinforcement using carbon fiber strap system bonded with structural epoxy across the crack and along the affected wall section. The reinforcement converts the vulnerable wall into a load-distributing assembly capable of resisting the soil pressure that drove the original crack. Repair preserves the historic underground cooler structure while making it structurally sound.
- Carbon fiber strap reinforcement
